Hi! I’m Kate Broad.

My debut literary novel, GREENWICH, is coming out from St. Martin’s Press in July 2025, but I’ve been working in publishing for nearly twenty years. I graduated summa cum laude from Wellesley College with a BA in Political Science and English, with honors. During college, I started working as a freelance writer and editor for textbook companies. I then received my PhD in English from the CUNY Graduate Center in NYC, where I studied narrative and genre and wrote an award-winning dissertation on the romance plot in feminist political fiction. I published articles ranging from nineteenth-century utopian literature to colonialism in Octavia Butler to the love triangle in The Hunger Games. I also co-edited the first academic volume on YA dystopian lit, which is still considered a seminal text in the genre, and taught undergraduate English, Composition, and Creative Writing in the Bronx, where I live. All the while, I continued writing and editing for national and international companies, including Pearson/Savvas, Google, and other organizations and non-profits.

My academic research got me interested in romance fiction, especially in romance as a space for feminist writing. I’ve now published ten contemporary romance novels under the name Rebecca Brooks. (I chose a pen name to keep the steamy side separate from my academic publications and freelance work!) My books have been Amazon and Barnes & Noble top sellers, one of Jasmine Guillory’s “Top Picks” in Oprah Magazine, and finalists for multiple romance awards. They’ve sold tens of thousands of copies, been made into audiobooks and serialized on new platforms, and brought me in contact with readers from around the world.

I also have a second agent for literary fiction, and recently sold my debut novel, GREENWICH, to St. Martin’s Press (Macmillan). It will be out in July 2025. I got my agents through querying, and all my requests for materials and multiple offers of representation came from the slush pile. My writing has won over $40,000 in grant money, including a Bronx Recognizes Its Own (BRIO) award from the Bronx Council on the Arts, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. I’ve also had work published or forthcoming in The Rumpus, No Tokens, The Brooklyn Review, EOAGH, and other journals.
